So basically, this guy takes pictures of nasty, sweaty joggers and hits them up a week later, except this time, he tells them to get dressed up. When he takes the second picture, he makes sure the lighting and everything is the same, so you get what ends up looking like a before/after picture, contrasting what these people look like working out and uhh... going out.

All I can say is that those P90x and [insert face wash here] commercials don't seem as unrealistic. People can look really different...

Are You Afraid of the DSDark?: 90's Nickelodeon is back

This is some interesting news. Actually, it's more than interesting. In fact, it low-key made my day.

Apparently, Nickelodeon is going to have a 4 hour block during which they play all the good shows from the 90's. This makes me happy. Why? Kids shows today suck saggy donkey balls. I thought I was just being old and grumpy and that maybe the only reason I liked the shows I watched as a kid was nostalgia. But comparing the kids shows on TV today that I do like [Yo Gabba Gabba and Phineas and Ferb are the shit] to the ones from back in the day, I realize there's not much of a difference.

I can't put my finger on exactly what's changed in kids TV, but whatever it is, I hope it comes back. Here's the list of shows as shown in the Wikipedia Article.

As a lover of music, I've been on the hunt to find the God of sampling for quite some time. There's really nothing like hearing a song and then hearing where it originally came from or even the other way around. Sampling is an art form in an art form and I feel its a worthwhile endeavor to search for the person that's the best at it.

A lot of people seem to think sampling is only ever found in hip-hop, but it really is everywhere. Look at Daft Punk, whose French house style on their album, Discovery, involves sampling disco songs from the 70's and eq-ing the shit out of them until they sound like electronic music. Or the entire genre of trip-hop, which uses breakbeats from the 70's to turn music that would otherwise be classified as electronic or rock into something completely different.

One could argue that calling someone "the best sampler" is completely subjective, but I think that if you look at the technique rather than thinking of the music in terms of whether you like the song or not, it might not be an impossible title to give. I've always thought Hideki Naganuma was pretty high up there, but earlier today, I came across this guy named Pogo [via The Awesomer] and was a little blown away. He chops up movie songs and makes ambient-electro sounding music from it. In a lot of them, its not just voice samples, he samples the background music from the movies, as well. Give it a listen and see what I mean, then tell me what you think in the comments.

I always feel great after putting people on to new artists they may not have heard of. But introducing you all to work by someone I actually know is Abolishing Ignorance at its finest.

I went to highschool with Atcha for a year before she went back to Thailand. We didn't hear from each other much until around the end of highschool or the beginning in college [Thanks, Facebook.] It was around then when I noticed she was posting some cool. ass. shit. on there. From what I've seen on Facebook, she's been a model, photographer, and a dope ass chef, but here's what her webpage has to say about her:

Atcha is a self-taught photographer who was born in Nakhonratchasima, Thailand in 1988.

She moved to Bangkok in 2006 to study at Chulalongkorn University majoring in Media Management and graduated in 2010. She believes that photography helps her see the world in different angles and that life always has two sides to it, which led her to expressing her world through the camera.

And there you go. Even though this is just a selection of some of her phototgraphy [You can find more here if you're interested], the range of the subject matter covered is pretty wild. There are some glamour, some wild high-fashion, some gritty rural photography, some non-gritty rural photography, some landscapes, and more.

What does the word "Punk" mean to you? According to the internet dictionaries, it means one of several things, but none of them really describe what many of us are likely thinking when we hear the word [unless you're Fleece Johnson].

Is it a type of music? Is it a movement? Is it a style? Is it an ideology? Is it an ideology of those participating a movement that dictates participants' styles?

Well, if Wiktionary and Merriam-Webster can't answer that question for you, I sure as hell can't either.

I can, however, tell you how I feel about this word. I think of "Punk" as a deliberate diversion from the mainstream. A lot of the time this diversion takes the form of music, fashion, and political views. And a lot of the time, some good ass art has come of it. [I'd go on another rant about how beautifully Jet Set Radio illustrates this point, but I think I DSDo that at least every other blog post already.]

So, on the topic of good ass art, I'd like to introduce you to Mudlevel [Via BBCBlog]. I consider this punky as hell in that he diverges heavily from the mainstream with his craft- making crazy ass, MacGyver ass, Inspector Gadget ass machines.

Research and DSDevelopment:: LA Noire Tech Demo

This stuff is unreal, in my opinion. We've come a long ass way from pong. Hell, even from N64. It annoys me a ton how people dismiss videogames as juvenile when in actuality, they're probably more sophisticated works of art than movies. Movies go scene by scene and only give you what you need to understand the story. Videogames are and are becoming more and more interactive, meaning the developers have to include a plot and other auxiliary details to really bring the player into the world.

Check out this video for Rockstar Games' [the Grand Theft Auto people..] LA Noire. The cool stuff starts happening toward the middle/end. I had no idea mocap had gotten so sophisticated, but I can definitely eff with it. Enjoy.

Been a while... sorry about that. My laptop was out of commission for a minute amongst other things. In any case, I have a really tight video to show you all to make up for it.

Maybe I'm a little different, but I was a huuge Japanophile from like 7th grade up till about my senior year of highschool. I loved samurai movies and anime relating to that topic as well. I was also aware that most of that stuff was highly stylized and that people can't really do most of that shit in real life. I was reeeeal fuckin wrong- check it out.

This is my most recent project and also my first creative endeavor in quite some time if you don't count music production. Some friends and I were watching a movie with the sound muted while playing music in the background and some parts synced perfectly without any sort of adjustment. Later on, we watched some Soul Train and the gears began to turn.

I'm a huge fan of intentional creative anachronisms [Samurai Champloo/Cowboy Bebop/Jet Set Radio, anyone?] so I really enjoyed making this. I hope you like it.

Its been a while. It took a while to get settled in this schoolyear and then afterward I had uhh... blogger's block? Sorry about that.

Anyways, enjoy this guy's work. Its pretty damn cool. I'm a huge fan of splatter effects and I use them a lot in my work. These pictures are a perfect example of intentional scruffiness and I think it works out really nicely here.

Now for the audio. I picked two Chevelle songs I thought went well with this. I feel like rock and the grunge-splat style complement each other. I guess I'd suggest you pick either or and scroll through the pictures slowly.

I'm not a fan of cigarettes, but I have a similar problem that drives me to gas stations late at night. Watermelon Sour Patch Kids.

You might not take it terribly seriously, but this addiction keeps me from doing everyday activities. Its rather serious. And maybe I'm behind, but I'll tell you something else that's serious. These Sour Patch Fruits.

DSDrama: The Real WorldRecap

I want comments on this one, people...

For this season's Real World, I tried to pick out the character stereotypes and my favorite and least favorite roommates. It was fairly easy to do, but its changed up quite a bit since episode one. I want to do a recap and see if you all agree with me/your comments.

First off, I'll rate the roommates in order of attractiveness.

McKenzie>Sahar>Jemmye>Ashlee

[Sahar needs some Sudafed.... badly]

Alrighty, folks. Episode by episode. I'll list the Wikipedia generated episode guide to refresh your memory and then I'll rank characters from favorite to least favorite after each episode.

Episode 1: Welcome to New Orleans

The roommates meet and move into their the house. Knight reveals he is recovering from painkiller addiction following shoulder surgery, and Ryan mentions he used to use Xanax for his depression, though they exchange heated words when Knight questions Ryan's manhood. Eric is attracted to Sahar, while Ryan's attraction to McKenzie leads to irritation when older men flirt with her, and protectiveness when he sees her drinking. He also makes comments that offend Jemmye and Preston, leading to a heated argument, though he and Preston make amends.^[35]^[36]

Eric = Sahar = Jemmye > McKenzie = Ashlee = Knight > Preston > Ryan

[Eric seemed pretty cool here. And I guess at the time, I liked Sahar because she's low key bad. This was also before I noticed Jemmye's grill. Yikes.]

Episode 2: Knight Fights Love Bites

Ryan and Preston become close, as do Eric and Sahar, though Eric perceives mixed signals. Preston reveals his mother's addiction to crack cocaine, Ryan reveals that he is a virgin and Jemmye reveals that she has never been with a Caucasian man, which inspires Knight. Knight's skepticism of a shoulder injury Ryan incurs after a climb over the house's front gate leads to a heated argument between the two.^[39]^[40]=

Knight = Eric = Jemmye > Ashlee = McKenzie = Sahar > Preston > Ryan

[Knight keeps it a hundred all of the time without being obnoxious, so he gets bumped up. Sahar gets bumped down for semi-playing Eric's life after coming on to him. Preston whines too much and Ryan is bitchmade and creepy.]

Episode 3: Jemmye's White Knight

As the cast enjoys Mardi Gras, Ryan and McKenzie become close, but after he becomes romantic with her visiting friend, Suze, she feels betrayed. Preston juggles multiple men. McKenzie believes that sex should be based on love, in contrast to Knight, who hopes to be the first Caucasian man Jemmye sleeps with. After that wish is fulfilled after a night out of heavy drinking for Jemmye, McKenzie worries about problems on the horizon for them.^[42]^[43]

Knight > Jemmye = Preston > Eric = Ashlee = Sahar > McKenzie > Ryan

[Knight is that dude. He should win some sort of award for how he went about pulling Jemmye. McKenzie shows her first signs of bitchassness/whackness. Preston begins to show that he is not whiny all the time and he knows how to have a good time. Jemmye seems down as hell. {I still have not noticed her grill at this point}]

Episode 4: Superbrawl 2010

Knight and Jemmye's sexual relationship continues, leading to complaints on the part of their roommates, and conflict over another woman. Ashlee and Preston record material for WWOZ to further their career, with some difficulty. After participating in the Barkus Day Parade, the cast enjoys Super Bowl XLIV at a bar, leading to an emotional but temporary expulsion for Preston, and worry over McKenzie's drinking. Preston, Knight and McKenzie discuss Preston's coming out, his relationships, and questions about Ryan's sexuality, much to Ryan's irritation. This, along with Ryan's use of homophobic slurs, leads to recurring conflict between him and Preston, including their secretly soiling each other's belongings with their own bodily orifices and fluids.^[45]^[46]

Knight = Eric > Ashlee = Sahar> Preston > Jemmye > McKenzie > Ryan

[Jemmye starts cock blocking even though she claims not to be in a serious relationship with Knight, so she gets bumped down. Knight continues to be that dude. Preston gets bumped down for handling the bar situation like a bitch {note: bitch as in bitch, not bitch as in female}. Ryan continues to be a weirdo. Ashlee continues to be irrelevant. Eric gets bumped up for the scene during which EVERYONE else is fighting and he is chillin silently w/ his chicken and fries]

Episode 5: Confused and Abuse

The cast gets to ride in a Tucks Parade float, while Preston and Ashlee continue their work for WWOZ. Preston and Ryan's mutual animus continues, though they form an uneasy truce. The cast's worries over McKenzie's drinking persists, until she meets a man named Travis who prefers to talk instead of drink. Jemmye and Knight begin to question their relationship, in light of Jemmye's boyfriend, Mississippi State^[24] and the revelation by Jemmye about abuse on the part of the man she dated prior to him.^[23]^[48] basketball player Kodi Augustus,

Knight > Preston = Eric = Ashlee = Sahar > Jemmye > McKenzie > Ryan

[McKenzie is the annoying drunk friend that you have to take care of. She is rather annoying usually, but she went out of her way in this episode. Dude she was talking to was also a bitch nigga. {note: nigga, in this context, describes a white man}. Jemmye continues to be a thirsty cockblocker. Preston gets bumped down for easing off on Ryan and Ryan is still... whack]

Episode 6: Sing out, Cop Out

Ryan and Preston's conflict comes to a head, with their cast mates caught in the middle, after their mutual soiling of each other's belongings is revealed. As Sahar pursues her musical aspirations, she meets local musician Theresa Andersson, who mentors her. Jemmye and Ryan enjoys a visit from Jemmye's mother, Alice. Seeking retribution, Ryan summons the police to complain about Preston's urination on his toothbrush, much to the surprise of the rest of the cast, who see this as an overreaction on Ryan's part. After the cast volunteers at a local soup kitchen, Preston and Ryan exchange apologies in order to put their conflict behind him, though Ryan later reveals that he tore up Preston's debit card.^[50]^[51]

Knight > Ashlee = Jemmye = McKenzie > Preston > Eric = Sahar> Ryan

[Ryan has sunken so low into the abyss of whackness that it is nearly impossible to return at this point. Eric gets demoted for snitching. Its one thing to say you know about something so you don't catch heat for someone else's shenanigans and another entirely to give every detail of said shenanigans. Preston would be down with Eric for hugging it out with Ryan at the end of the episode if he wasn't such a G with the cops. And again, Knight gets promoted to number one for secretly egging both Ryan and Preston on just so he could see a fight. Sahar gets demoted for being ridiculously thirsty and annoying.]

Episode 7: Building and Breaking

The cast chafes against Knight's homophobic comments about Preston, and his disrespectful behavior towards Jemmye. After Sahar confides in Jemmye about her boyfriend, Pablo's infidelity, a taunt Knight makes during an exchange of insults with Sahar results in Sahar's irritation with Jemmye. After touring parts of the city still devastated by Hurricane Katrina, the cast helps to rebuild houses with Habitat for Humanity, except for Ryan, who says he doesn't feel like building houses, and fears interacting with the group will lead to further conflict. After a talk with Knight, Preston comes to see his more sensitive side, and Knight makes amends with him and Sahar, but his continued abuse of Jemmye leads her to seek help at a battered woman's shelter, where she comes to realize that she has not fully dealt with her tendency to gravitate toward the wrong men.^[53]^[54]

Knight > Ashlee = McKenzie = Eric > Preston > Jemmye > Sahar > Ryan

[This episode pissed me off hardcore. Knight has had Jemmye's back from episode 2, but the girls decide that he is abusive towards her and start getting her crazy ass {note: by this point, I have noticed her grill} riled up for no reason. The problem with Knight could have very easily been defused by her either A.) Not making the same teasing jokes Knight was making or responding positively to them or B.) Simply telling him she was offended by them. He repeatedly said that if she came to him and said that if she was bothered, he would stop and they made him out to be some kind of bad guy in this episode. Same with him and Preston. You can't pick and choose when to be sensitive to the same kind of comment. He didn't get mad when Knight made joking gay jokes toward him earlier, but he does get mad when he expresses his distaste for dressing in drag?

Anyways, Knight gets the #1 spot for handling that situation well. Left unchecked, it could have caused serious problem. I'll explain the other reason in a sec.

Preston gets bumped down for whining in addition to everything else I just wrote. Jemmye gets bumped down for being a thirsty, cockblocking, weirdo. Sahar gets knocked down extra extra for starting a fight and then crying when the Knight finished it. Weak. And Ryan is Ryan.]

Episode 8: Saint Patrick's Secrets

The cast works at the mission on Saint Patrick's Day, during which Ryan talks with a 22-year-old homeless man, but Knight, Jemmye and McKenzie go drinking instead. McKenzie meets a man named Grant, with whom she becomes romantically affectionate back at the mansion. Jemmye, however, gets drunk, and acts irrationally depressed and angry back at the mansion, attempting at one point to walk out to return back to Mississippi. After a sympathetic Knight talks to her, Jemmye realizes that she has not confronted the issue of her past abuse, and decides to see Dale, a social worker at the women's shelter, on a weekly basis. She also confides in her mother about her past abusive relationship for the first time.^[56]^[57]

{Note: All I remember about this episode is that it was boring. Next}

Episode 9: Fired

As Ryan's erratic behavior disturbs the the rest of the cast, he confides to Sahar that he suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder, which has been worsening. Suspicion falls on Knight after Ashlee discovers her Percoset standup comedy act to take the stage herself. Though she forgets the words to her song, Eric's support lifts her spirits.^[59]^[60] is missing, fueling conflict between Jemmye and Ryan, and between Sahar and Knight. After Knight is apparently exonerated by a drug test, the cast begins to suspect Ryan. The under-confident Sahar is spurred by a visit from her best friend, Lila, and seeing Eric's standup comedy act to take the stage herself. Though she forgets the words to her song, Eric's support lifts her spirits.^[59]^[60]

Knight = Eric = Preston > Jemmye > McKenzie = Ashlee > Sahar > Ryan

[Eric and Preston struck me as cool in this episode, but I don't quite remember why. Knight handled the drug situation really well. Ashlee was a bit annoying with how she confronted Knight about the situation, but she didn't seem to think he really did anything. Jemmye gets bumped up for coming at Ryan's life for lying but bumped down for going about it irrationally.

Sahar is now down with Ryan for me as far as least favorite characters go. She is: thirsty (look at how she interacts with her friend), whiny, and gets excitable about dumb shit. Worst of all, she came at Knight on the subject of his drug problem then decided she would freak out when he claimed she couldn't sing. Princess mentality?

Ryan is a nutcase.]

What do you guys think? I'm interested to see how the season unfolds.

I went through a little phase in my early years of highschool when I liked vampire-ish stuff. [Not that Twilight garbage, mind you] like Hellsing and I guess it kind of stuck with me.

Anyways, enough about me, enjoy these these sculptures and tell me what you think about them. The amount of detail that went into these is incredible. I feel like if I made one of these, it would be a wrap forever after that. That's so much work.

Hey, all. I had this random idea that I thought might just somehow work if people helped out. I call it The DSDillo Day Project.

The whole point of Dillo Day is to get fucked up, right? Don't tell me its the concert because as much of an N*E*R*D fan as I am, most people hadn't the slightest clue as to who they were and Nelly has not been relevant since the seniors were freshmen... in highschool.

So if the goal of Dillo Day is to get fucked up, then one can gauge its success by how fucked they were on average throughout the course of the day. Now here's where you come in.

I want as many people as possible to follow me on Twitter and throughout the course of the day, Tweet me [thedsdispatch] a direct message of this format:

X represents how fucked up you are on a scale of 1-10 and YY represents the time rounded to the closest hour.

DSD Presents: "All DSD'd Up [V.3]"

This is my first personal work in a minute. I'm glad I'm getting known better and better by the student body. I was going for a particular look and feel for this one. I can't really put my finger on what those were or where I got the inspiration from, but I can tell you that it looks like absolute trash unless you fullview and see the texture and whatnot.

And for the designers out there, I basically took a picture over a black background and made a couple effect layers above that one before putting a pink and blue gradient map on it [Hence the title] Then I masked the whole thing out so it was invisible. Afterwards, I used splatter/grunge brushes at varying opacities to kind of build up the face.

Shout out to the little sis for pointing some stuff out that was fixed shortly afterward with the quickness. [Hence the V.3]

So, if you all didn't know, my computer had a catastrophic crash and I wasn't able to use it throughout most of February and March. That being said, I got kind of rusty with Photshop.

A little bit after I got my computer back, I decided to find a picture to do a practice run on while going back to my roots of retouching.

I'd list all the edits I made, but I want you to try to guess first. It takes a lot of changes to get a subtle but noticeable effect.

DSDeconstructing: The Phrozen Hearts Flyer

I was contacted by the A Mu chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha to make a flyer for their upcoming party, Phrozen Hearts. [Feb 12th at the Indigo Lounge in Evanston... right by Northwestern.... you should probably attend it.] I agreed and got to work later that week.

The flyer didn't take me more than an hour twenty to make. Not because it was easy to make [or because I'm a boss like that] but because the idea came to my head relatively quickly. I usually have an idea, make something, mess up in the process, and then find something better while fixing it/starting fresh. This time I had an idea, made something, and liked it.

So I started with a couple specific concepts/theme:

Black and Gold color scheme
Light blue or maybe silvery secondary color scheme
Valentines Day
Alpha
Frozen
Grown and Sexy
Lounge

After I figured I had enough to work with conceptually, I started to put them together. I was initially gonna find some big booty chick, make her black and gold, and get on with my life. But I don't like half-assing anything that's going to be shown to the public and definitely don't like half-assing things done for clients. After a couple minutes of searching, I found an appropriate picture... I guess.

I personally didn't like the picture because the girl is busted as I don't know what, but thankfully, she was not the focal point of the image and there was going to be a lot of manipulation done to the photo, so I decided to march on.

I don't have graphic step by step images, but what I did was increase the contrast on them A LOT, making the dark areas darker and the light areas lighter. Then I applied a filter that gave the lighter areas a glossy look to them. Then I applied another curves layer to increase the contrast, making it look like... extra glossy. Then I added a hue/saturation layer and turned them gold, which made them look more metallic than anything.

I wasn't exactly feeling the NegrOscar statue look, so I decided to implement the "frozen" concept here since black and gold were already covered. I duplicated the gold layer and turned it icy blue, changing it from glossy to frosty. From there, I masked out the blue layer around where I imagined there'd be a lot of body heat like... melting off the ice. Anywhere that was masked turned back to the gold color, giving it the effect you see.

For finishing touches, I experimented with a super curvy beveled layer style for the text to make it look frozen/metallic. I think it worked out okay, but could have looked better. I'll perfect that in the future. I also added a noise layer [you can sort of see black speckles all over their bodies] to add some grit to the overly smooth skin and then added clouds and difference clouds [You can sort of see a cloudy texture on his jeans, but its all over their bodies] to make it look a little more icy. [Burr!]

And that was it.

I got a call later saying that they wanted to make print pluggers. Unfortunately, the pluggers were not 4x6 inches like the e-flyer. The resolution of the pluggers/the necessity of a 1/8" bleed on the edge would have made it necessary for me to make so many changes that I might as well redo the flyer from scratch.

...That's basically what I did other than the text, which I had to mess with a little as well. I wanted to follow the same theme, so I enlarged some floral patterns to the point that they just looked like colored curvy lines and then I centered the text and made it look uniform/pretty again.

And there you have it. I hope the party is good. [I'm sure it will be]

We'd stay in at and play that mofo till we got banned.... then we had the cards and show to talk about. It's a shame it became uncool after a while, because the Pokemon games were actually really good RPGs. They were basically bad-ass, non-annoying Tamagotchis.

So if have this problem... I like to be cool, calm, and collected at all times. [Obviously doesn't work 100% of the time] And one way to be able to do so without going completely insane is by putting things off.

For instance, I keep all my art blogs and whatnot in Google reader for easy access, but school got in the way [as always] and I couldn't get to read them all as quickly as I had wanted. So they were just piling up, 2000+ pieces of art/music waiting to be looked at/heard. When I went to check, I noticed I had a lot of reading to do and if I marked all of those pictures as read, I might miss out on a particularly pretty picture or something. What did I do? I ignored them for all of December because the thought of reading all of them was too mentally taxing.

In any case, I was feeling rather mentally spry today so I decided to dive in.

DSDGlobal X MDT5: Top 5 Pop Culture Incidents of the Decade

Hey. I'm gonna get right to it and tell you all about what I think were the biggest pop culture incidents of the decade. Plenty of bums, breakdowns, public battles, and [boobs!] to come. So enjoyjoy, DSDarlings.

1. Nipplegate

Oh... right, NSFW. Oops?

But honestly, folks. Anyone that saw this will remember it forever. I'll go as far as to say that they'll remember exactly what went through their mind exactly when they saw it. [Boobs!] And also, "Why is her nipple so shiny?" And don't forget, "Wait... what?"

To a 13 year old watching the Super Bowl, this was approximately 232.87% more of a big deal than seeing a Girls Gone Wild commercial when you were up past your bedtime watching South Park.

To a 13 year old watching the Super Bowl with their family, this was approximately 848.23% more awkward and cringe inducing.

In the end, I wasn't really too mad. I'd be dumb to complain about the situation. [Boobs!] Unfortunately, because there are people that will get mad at everything, the next day all the news stations were making it seem as if they had cancelled the game and staged a massive Jackson 5/N*Sync orgy. This would be okay with me if these groups showed some consistency, but I've heard Becky, The Whisper Song, and Poke Her Face several times on the radio and seen Nicki Minaj's Jurassic Park lookin ass Vagina through her pants more than enough times to show me that any complaints about this incident were just for the sake of having something to complain about. If I had children, I'd personally rather they see a partially clothed titty for a fraction of a second than sing along in the car, "Put some mayonnaise on your child."

2. The Chris Brown/Rihanna Incident

When I first heard that this happened, I was sure it was a rumor. Growing up with West African women and fighting my sisters as a child and early teenager, I was simply baffled on how Rihanna could possibly have gotten got by a hoe ass punk like Chris Breezy. Let it be known that I am not jumping on any sort of bandwagon. I'm still a Dr. Dre fan. And please believe that if Pharrell Williams beat on someone, I'd still be his number one fan. [It's a problem. I've already addressed this.] That being said, I've always hated this dude. Everything but Run It and Poppin. And even those got Played Out After a while.

Like [Lil']Bow Wow, when the novelty of being young wore off, Chris Brown fell off the map. I mean, that might be an unfair example as Bow Wow plummeted to his death Mortal Kombat style. But honestly, dude is like a jank Usher.

Speaking of Mortal Kombat, did you see ole girl's face? He even bit her! And to make things worse, dude's trying to act hard after the whole incident, but at the same time going around and crying about the situation. It's going to be hard for him to redeem himself in 09', but if it comes out that he was the one that leaked those Rihanna nudies[Boobs!], he's already taken a step toward the light in my book.

3. Anything Kanye West has Ever Done In Public Other than Concerts

Don't get me wrong. I love the man to death, but he acts like your bad little cousin whose mom gave up on spanking him. First there was the original Kanyegate. This dude called out the president of the United Muhfucking States of America.

From there, he learned that he could get away with doing outrageous things like this for publicity and then proceeded to brutally rape and alabama hot pocket the concept of shock value throughout the decade. Anytime he didn't win an award, the man absolutely loses his shit. [If he isn't acting in that last video, may God bless his DSDear soul.] He also smacked the mess out of a paparazzi.

Finally, he decided to go out with a bang, Kanyegate 2. Absolutely shitting all over Taylor Swift's life at the VMA's. [I apologize, but footage is nowhere to be found on Youtube.] Personally, I don't think this was that big of a deal for several reasons- it was Kanye... we should be used to it by now, the VMA's aren't really a legitimate awards show, Taylor Swift is not an important human being, and finally, because she reacted like a punk. Any reasonable person would have taken their mic back and been like, "Anyways...."

I still love you, Yeezy. Do what it does.

4. The Michael Jackson Trial

I don't think he did it. I think Michael was a strange ass man, don't get me wrong. But having a bad childhood can make you think certain things are acceptable that seem strange in the public eye.

If I [hypothetically speaking, of course] raped some kids, I damn sure wouldn't say they slept in the same bed as me on live television. I mean, that entire interview where Martin Bashir lived in his house for weeks while pretending to be his friend then went to ABC and told everyone the man was a psycho was out of line. The world did MJ real sheisty and he probably died an unhappy man because of this situation.

"So Far Gone - Drake" While this list isn't in any particular order - none of mine ever are - it's arguable that So Far Gone was the best mixtape of the year. It dropped February 13th, and it became the archetype for what a well-crafted mixtape can mean to an artist: a career-maker. Two videos, two Grammy nominations, and the all-important BET Hustler of the Year nod later (seriously), Drake had taken over the rap game. All you "I was on Drake since Room For Improvement" lames, I hear you. Those tapes didn't get your boy a $2 million deal and two Top 10 singles in the same week. So Far Gone did. This raised the production bar for mixtapes. Not a DJ drop the whole way, complex samples, and respectable wordplay. Tough to argue against that, as much as I want to. *Here's your benchmark test. Put a camera in yourgooniest goon friend's car, and just wait till "Brand New" comes on. See if he doesn't sing every word despite there not being a bed or a girl within 50 feet without saying "no homo". That's how good the tape is.

Notable Tracks: "Best I Ever Had", "November 18th", "Say What's Real"

"Back To The Feature - Wale" Another album-quality mixtape. Don Cannon and DJ Drama's screams were nowhere to be found on Back To The Feature. What we did get was the best tape of the summer, full of incredible features and more stellar lyricism from Wale. Only 3 producers - most prominent being 9th Wonder - worked on the tape, giving it a flow and continuity that most albums don't enjoy. In other words, this shit bumps. Every time I listen to it - every Wednesday at 2 pm to be exact - I catch a punchline or metaphor I'd missed. My favorite still remains, "...and my brain travels like Yung Berg jewels." When a rapper has to help you get the meaning of a line after his 16 is over, dude is doing something serious. For simple, straight-up collaborative hip-hop, this is where you come. Wale calls the underlying theme of the tape, "niggas be rappin'". Couldn't put it any better.

Notable Tracks: "Tito Santana", "Rather Be (Vagina Is For Lovers)", "Um Ricka"

"The Warm Up - J. Cole" If you knew who J. Cole was after The Come Up, good for you. Your trophy is in the mail. For pretty much everyfuckingbody else, The Warm Up was J. Cole's introduction to the world. And it was a hell of an introduction. Dude is quickly getting the "murder you on your own track" reputation, and if you listen to this tape you'll understand the hype. Not only does he have the punchline braggadocio that mixtape audiences demand, J. Cole really shines through with his range and versatility. He raps about things real people can relate to; college, not knowing what to do after college, stalking women, things like this. You become invested in his lyrics. He produces his songs as well, which is pretty much like a demolition crew building their own buildings, and so we get to listen to an artist's entire vision - from snare to simile - which is incredible. Drake's debut album may be 2010's most anticipated, but I'll be first in line to support J. Cole.

Notable Tracks: "Lights Please", "Losing My Balance", "I Get Up"

"No Ceilings - Lil' Wayne" You know you have a monster of a mixtape when you make people forget about the original songs. I can't even listen to "Swag Surf" and "Ice Cream Paint Job" anymore. They're Wayne's songs now. With the official drop coming on Halloween 2009, Weezy F. dispelled any doubts about him losing it/selling out/going "rock". I remember Kamau sitting on Demas' couch when I brought the leaked version over a couple nights before Halloween, going on about how Wayne had fallen off so hard and hadn't made real shit since the Drought 3. That stopped after we'd gotten through No Ceilings, and the tape was on repeat all night. Wayne, if you can make a believer out of Kamau again, nothing can stop you. No Ceilings is 21-track wake-up call to the rest of us. Wayne may mess around with Scarface-guitar samples, but he's still a beast. I'm not exactly a Wayne fan, but this tape was probably the most played thing in my car this fall. Favorite line: "I make the pussy Microsoft like Windows Vista." Never felt prouder to be a PC owner in my life.

Notable Tracks: "Swag Surfin", "No Ceilings", "Oh Let's Do It"

"He's The King, I'm The DJ - DJ Jazzy Jeff" Shouts to Lo for putting me on, knowing the unnaturally huge Mike fan I am. It's obviously not rap, but who says mixtapes have to be. Jeff mixes, scratches, and blends his way through a 49-track masterpiece. Making a great MJ tribute tape sounds easy; the man has an unparalleled discography to choose from. But, just imagine how hard that would be. Imagine if I gave you the keys to Fort Knox and asked you to find me the 49 best bricks of gold in the whole place. You'd probably break down Donald Duck-style. Well Jazzy Jeff took on that task, and succeeded. When you play this tape, you forget your iPod even has a skip button. He seamlessly combines old Mike with new Mike, black Mike with white Mike. I could go on for pages, so I'll stop, but if you don't download any other tape on this list please download this one. I don't care if you don't support Mike, you aren't putting any money in his sequined pockets here. This is just as much about Jazzy Jeff as it is Mike. Just give it a listen and appreciate the magic that happens when two geniuses collaborate.

"Rihanna" Boy oh boy, is that worth 1000 words. Barbados' finest export had a pretty roller coaster year: from 2 Grammy nominations and the critically acclaimed Rated R, to getting Chris Brown'd by Chris Brown and missing her performance at said Grammys. I still give her the 'W' for the year, though. She could get the 'D' too.

"Freida Pinto" Slumdog Millionaire dropped stateside in January, and we (and by "we" I mean me) got our first taste of Ms. Pinto. I went back to my AMC theater for seconds and thirds too, I'm not ashamed to say it. Freida made it possible for me to endure the predictable love story that was Slumdog, as well as the "why does that clown get to make out with Latika" frustration that nearly cost me my sanity. That population explosion in India is paying serious dividends.

"Megan Fox" While overrated in my eyes, and yes they do work, Megan Fox has pretty much Debo-ed her way onto this list. She was everywhere in 2009. Ok, she really only was in Transformers 2 and in magazines, but it seemed like she was everywhere. To straight guys. I'm not going to kid myself here and act like I wouldn't do terrible things to her, but she's not the second coming. *Resist...play...on...words...* Still, Ms. Fox is a force to be reckoned with. And she doesn't have a problem taking clothes off or kissing girls either. That helps.

"Alicia Keys" If you turned on a TV or a radio the last half of 2009, odds are you heard Alicia singing the hook from "Empire State of Mind". Aside from that song having taken over the fall and winter's Billboard charts, and the World Series, Keys is flat out fine. The source of my second "why does that clown get to chop her down" crisis, Alicia Keys is one of the most incredible blends of beauty, talent, and class we have. Another #1 album in December, Billboard's #5 artist of the decade, and a philanthropist, Alicia is the type of girl on this list that you marry......Sike!! If I had a shot, I'd marry any and all of the above. But, you get what I mean.

"...Twerk Team"

How can you argue with me after seeing that video? According to YouTube, Twerk Team burst on the viral video scene in June. The world of ass-clapping would never be the same. Do me a favor. Think of that one song you always bug the DJ at the party to play after your second glass of punch. Twerk Team has a video for that. While some of the Team aren't really pretty - a couple are actually legit busted - they all get As for effort. Can we get these girls a Gatorade sponsorship? I heard that the company is a client short nowadays.

5 Worst Fashion Trends of the Decade

So in honor of the new year, DSDglobal and MDT5 are doing some collabo work. I read somewhere that a good way to get people to read your blog was to make lists and at the end of the year, people usually put together big lists of things. So I figured, "It's the end of a decade, why the hell not?"

1. Kanye Shades

To start off, I'm sure these... things have an official name, but Kanye is the person with whom we all associate them with. Following that train of thought, they were only cool when Kanye Wore them. Kanye [and other celebrities] do a lot of stuff you cant do. Like this and this. With all the emotions brewing from the Glow In The Dark Tour, some[read "way too many"] people failed to realize that they were not, in fact, celebrities. And then decided that they'd look cool wearing Kanye Shades with disastrous results.

Glasses with no lenses that partially obstruct your vision are part of a costume, not part of an outfit.

2. The Keffiyeh

I'm not even gonna front. I love these shits. I used to rock them all the time in highschool. They're not bad in the sense that they're ugly [if not a bit played out], but bad in the sense that they're distasteful.

Why would you go and commercialize something with such a cultural meaning to a group of people? I'm not sure people would like it much if, for example, American flags became trendy somewhere and big name models were wearing them around their heads.

In my opinion, if there's a meaning behind something. Find out before you do/wear/say it. It's an easy way to stay out of trouble.

3. Skinny Jeans on Men

Guys can not do this. It's not allowed. Coming from me, this is a big deal. I love the color pink, I shop at H&M based on what I already don't have rather than what I want to get, and I have more shoes than your average girl. But I would never ever ever even think about wearing these.

This trend is rather new and I think it'll end rather quickly. All it'll take is one unfortunate incident. Some of us call guys w/ sagging purple skintight jeans hipsters and there are others who address them as "You know the drill, bitch. Spread em."

3. Tall Tees

I think these are okay... if you want to be a victim of racial profiling and police violence[even if you're white!]. Call me bougie, but aside from ashy lips, I consider when at least 3/4 of the males in view wearing XXXXXXL Tees to be the biggest indicator of hood-ness.

Look at the pictures above. The first person is smiling, but they still don't look like someone you can trust. Now look down at the next few people. Same story. Now imagine all of these people in large polos from Express.

Yeah. It's kinda like that.

4. BAPE

I'm not even gonna no homo this: I am a Pharrell Williams dickrider. I need help. But for the time being, I'm content with myself.

Now that that's out of the way, BAPE is whack. I mean, looking back, it was cool when I was in highschool. But after senior year, cool changes to corny real fast. It's not okay to look like a skittle anymore.

5. Ed Hardy/Coogi

Again, this is one of those things that were okay when they were cool, but should be allowed to finish their life cycle and die. I noticed the Coogi brand is kind of evolving away from the "I am doing entirely too much" school of fashion design, but they can not be forgiven for past transgressions.

Matching T-shirts, shoes, belts, sunglasses, hats, jeans, and jewelry doesn't make for a fly outfit. It's tacky. Please stop.

6. Wearing Leggings as Pants

Yeah, buddy.

Spring was always my favorite season. But only late spring. Now that college has started, spring means booty.[Usually]

So the point of that was that when I was driving home from the Chi-Chi today, I was looking through my ipod and I saw The Testimony of Gemstones for the first time in a looong minute. [Tragedy what happened to him. Look him up on Wikipedia.] The mixtape was raw as hell and I kind of miss the guy and hope he comes to his senses. So yeah, I was flipping through songs and I came across the beat from Allure and I was like "OH! THAT'S WHERE I HEARD THIS!"

Watching this movie reminded me about those days as a kid when your imagination could really take you to all sorts of different places even though you were just looking out the window or playing with toys. As far as imagination goes, nowadays I'm content with whatever thoughts pass through my mind when I'm not doing homework.

Case StuDSD: 3D and Nitelite's Twerk or Treat

I mentioned Halloween in my last post. Well, I wanted to add a statement to it, and that statement is, "Eff Halloween". Also, eff Evanston police. They can suck a fat one.

With that out of the way, those of you [At Northwestern] that did manage to have fun on Halloween were probably at The Keg. If you weren't there, I apologize. If you were there; however, I hope that before you attended, you saw the flyer on Facebook. And if you saw that, I hope you saw the little DSD logo in the bottom lefthand corner.

I put a lot of work into that flyer and I thought I'd outline what exactly this "work" means:

1. Failure - I made a flyer in about an hour before the Phi Delt Halloween party [lots of fun, go to Mathletes and Athletes on Saturday] and I kind of ruhed it because I thought of it as a rough draft. Apparently it wasn't one, so this got submitted to FB.

First things first, I don't like putting out any less than 100%[This is not true. I am perfectly content with 75% as long as people think and appreciate it as 100% ...but don't tell anyone] But this, DSDarlings, was absolute trash. Why?

The fonts didn't look very Halloween-y
The text was very random and there was no real pattern or grid explaining where they were placed.
The girls were cute [except the one in the referee suit, take a close look at her face...] and wearing costumes, but they were in random-ass positions and I don't like random randomness [planned randomness is okay].

2. Remorse - I felt terrible that this was about to be my contribution to someone else's event. I wouldn't really appreciate if I asked someone to make that for me and I got that flyer. That's like how you feel every time you go through the McDonalds drive through expecting the plump, juicy burger in the little picture but what you get[always] is a grayish piece of flat meat that looks like Mo'nique sat on it.... and farted.

That's how I felt. So I decided to fix it. I got to work on another flyer and thought, "Think fast. How are you going to do this?"

And here is what I thought[fast]:

3. Redemption - I immediately got crackin and looked for pictures that sort of captured the ideas posed at the end of that last section and I came across some pictures, including [but not limited to] the following:

There were a couple more type of candy included in the final cut, but you get the picture.

After staring blankly at my screen for a while, I thought I'd make a bunch of bags of candy the background of the image and then make their color scheme black and orange. Then I put the girls in the middle of the picture, but they didn't quite look right. They were drawing attention away from the title and I also didn't find either of them particularly attractive. Rather than erasing them or shopping bags over their heads, I used the cutout filter to make them look a little more "cartoon-y" and then changed their colors to black and orange as well. Then I added the text and that was that.

4. Retouching - The picture still didn't look right. It was just text kind of floating with some girls in the middle on top of some candy. So what I decided to do [as always] was add layered splatters in orange and black. If I put a splatter above the girls and below them as well, it'd look like they were surrounded by it and it would give the picture a lot more dimension.

I did that.

Still wasn't feeling it.

So I decided that maybe putting a bag over their heads was a good idea. I took a picture of a brown paper bag or just some wrinkled paper and pasted it on top of the rest of the picture.

Then I blended it in to give the picture a darker orange hue and add subtle folds, creases, and most importantly, some much needed texture.

And that was basically it. I liked this picture a lot, but I guess what I like doesn't really matter much when designing something for a client. Big ups to James and Dallas for letting me do the job. I appreciated that. And here's the final picture.

I didn't quite know what to do with this one at first. I was originally going to do a glamour retouch of a human model, but then I figured I'd rather do something a little more fun.

So as I was searching through my stock pictures, I saw a picture that particularly caught my eye.

This beautifully detailed stock picture by Katanaz Stock hit the spot for me. I couldn't quite figure out what I want to do with it, but after a little brainstorming, I decided on the usual black blue and pink design with splatter patterns. And I guess that's all there was to it.

...not all of the time, at least. I think some laws need to be broken.

Graffiti is one of my favorite art forms. It's a combination of the punk-ish feel to it and the overall "mojo", "pizzazz", "swag", whatever you want to call it, that these artists seem to have. I honestly can't put a finger on it.

I've probably said it a million times, but the game Jet Set Radio has inspired the way I dress, talk, dance, act, and make any sort of art- audio or visual for years and its themes are heavily based on graffiti and the culture surrounding it.

So it was out of a personal passion that I found these images one by one instead of finding a compilation all by one artist like I usually do. It's only a couple images, but I promise next time I don't have a midterm, a quiz and problem sets to do, I'll post another set. Probably with a theme like "Graffiti in Barcelona"(the shit) or "Graffiti in Rio"(also the shit) etc, etc. I hope you likelike.

DSDoing the Impossible: Lighting Stuff "On Water"

I hate leaving sources uncredited when I post things that I didn't create, myself. But in this situation, I can't tell you where I found these because it would be breaking the number one rule of where I found them. I've already said too much...

In any case, here are some of the coolest pictures I've ever seen. I've been using photoshop for a loooong time now and I honestly couldn't tell you how they could have gone about making these.

DSDoing it Another Way: Flash

So over the summer/last couple of years, I've been trying to get good with macromedia flash. It's much easier, in my opinion than having to code the javascript/css for image rollovers, so now when I post images, the before/after images will be done with flash.

So basically, the original picture is the after pic and if you click and hold your mouse button down it will show you the old version.

This was a picture I was originally not going to put out because I didn't like it very much, but it really shows how subtle changes can really change a picture up. I did a bunch of edits as far as lighting and cleaning up her face went and then I did a little digital cosmetic surgery on her nose and lips. Now with the rollover, it's easier to tell what all I changed.

I'm not much of an illustrator. I'm better with editing preexisting objects and only work with illustration from scratch once in a while.

That being said, I wish I could do some of the things I see people doing. This art is great and the artist really has his own style.

Zack Kim never ceases to amaze me. Check out his other videos in which he plays two guitars at once better than most people can play one. Apparently he is also capable of playing one guitar at a time and making a sort of remix of a Daft Punk Classic. Check it.

Wow, I thought I knew anything and everything Neptunes. To be honest, I've heard of this album before, but I didn't think it would be anything special. Au contraire, I was pleasantly surprised when it basically sounded like the electronic version of "In Search of..." with new instrumentals and Kelis's vocals.

In other words, a whole bunch of semi-fresh goodness from the 8th planet. Made my night.

PeDSDazos and InsideOut [reup]

Sup? Here are two pictures I uploaded to Facebook earlier. The quality on FB is horrendous, so I thought I'd show you all here.

I called the first one PeDSDazos as "Pedazos" means "pieces" in Spanish. (Plus the word has D in it, which was mainly what I was looking for :-p)

And the second one is InsideOut, pretty much based on how it looks.
I'll include the original stock pictures by the wonderful JaneJayne. Probably my favorite stock artist/models ever. (After Lauren, that is)

DSD Presents: The Gospel of Lord Forreal [Re-up]

I thought I would re-up this mixtape that I spent forever trying to make. I think it turned out pretty well. If you're a big Neptunes-head like me, you've probably heard all of Disc 1. Disc 2 has some hard to find stuff as well as remixes by artists that aren't the Neptunes, but are trying to emulate their style and doing it well.

While I was making this mixtape cover art, I thought to myself: "Why make the mixtape square if there's not going to be an actual disc inside?" Boom! Rectangle. That's how it happened, don't let it throw you off.
